JEFF PARKER’S IVTET
Led by guitarist Jeff Parker, featuring saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Jay Bellerose, the ETA IVtet is a band that grew out of a weekly residency started by Parker in 2016 at Northeast Los Angeles venue ETA.
Over seven years of holding down that residency, Parker’s ETA ensemble evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form (sometimes stretching out for 45 minutes or more) journeys into innovative, often uncharted territories of groove-oriented, painterly, polyrhythmic, minimalist and mantric improvised music.
SML
SML is a quintet composed of luminaries from Los Angeles’s thriving jazz, improvised, and indie music scenes: bassist Anna Butterss (Jason Isbell, Phoebe Bridgers, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker), synthesist Jeremiah Chiu (Ariel Kalma, Marta Sofia Honer, Icy Demons), saxophonist Josh Johnson (Meshell Ndegeocello, Leon Bridges, Carlos Niño), percussionist Booker Stardrum (Photay, Lisel, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Wendy Eisenberg), and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (Meg Duffy, Perfume Genius, Tasha).
Their debut album Small Medium Large was recorded during the band’s first gigs at Highland Park’s former mainstay venue ETA in late 2022 and early 2023, post-produced the following year, and released in summer 2024 to wide critical acclaim. The album appeared on numerous “Best of 2024” lists, including Tone Glow, Passion of the Weiss, Bandcamp Daily, and Hearing Things.
Following the release of Small Medium Large, SML expanded beyond Los Angeles to perform at festivals and venues including Rewire (NL), Brdcast (BE), Warm Love Cool Dreams (Chicago), Winter Jazz Fest (NY), and Pickathon (OR). The group returns with a new album, How You Been, in fall 2025, alongside a string of shows through early 2026. In March 2026, SML will serve as artists-in-residence at Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN, performing three consecutive nights at the internationally renowned creative music summit.
